In order to stay in prime shape, and to stand alongside the elite, fitness is a prerequisite. Fitness is not a choice rather it’s your essential requirement when your goal is to stay healthy and happy. And to achieve that goal doing regular exercise is a must, along with leading a healthy lifestyle. Check out some of the main components of physical fitness.

Prior to moving into the nittty-gritty of fitness, let’s first discern what exactly is the meaning of physical fitness or being in prime shape. As per United States Department of Health and Human Services, physical fitness is ”a set of attributes that people have or achieve that relate to the ability to perform physical activity”. In plain words a person is considered fit if he or she can lift a heavy weight or run a long distance.

Here are the 3 main components that measure the overall fitness of an individual:

Cardio-Respiratory Endurance

Cardio-respiratory endurance in layman’s terms is the ability of the heart to pump blood rich oxygen for the functioning of your muscles. In order to prove your fitness you have to show that you remain fit without feeling tired or fatigued during physical exercise. Some of the common exercises and sports linked to cardio-respiratory endurance are: swimming, cycling, walking, jogging and aerobics. All the above mentioned exercises and sports boost the fitness level of your cardio-respiratory endurance.

Muscular Endurance

Muscular endurance is at times mixed up with muscular strength. If your body muscles are able to perform an action without feeling fatigued, you have a good muscular endurance. It is in fact connected to muscular strength and cardio-respiratory endurance. In order to improve the fitness level of muscular endurance, do exercises such as jogging, bicycling and dancing.

Muscular Strength

Muscular strength is measured by maximum amount of strength a muscle has while lifting or during an exertion. In other words you can define muscular strength as the ability of the muscle to exert strength during a workout or an activity. The best way to improve the physical fitness of muscular strength is through exercise such as lifting weights.
